I’ve heard they run our Watersports Centre…
Who are TRUT?
The Tees River Users Trust (TRUT) is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, run by representatives from the clubs based at the River Tees Watersport Centre.
The clubs involved are Tees Rowing Club, Tees Valley Dragons and the Wheely Boaters. A representative from Stockton Council also regularly attends meetings.
Why was it set up?
TRUT was established to support and coordinate the safe, fair and responsible recreational use of the River Tees Barrage Reach (between the Tees Barrage and the Princess of Wales Bridge). It acts as a practical link between river users and the Navigation Authority/River Master, helping to ensure that all clubs can operate smoothly and harmoniously.
The aim is simple: to promote and protect water-based activities on the Tees and to develop the area as a venue for regional, national and international events.
And to facilitate this, TRUT provides a home for all Watersports Clubs through the River Tees Watersports Centre (RTWC), for which it holds a 125 year lease (signed in 2013).
Does Tees RC need TRUT?
Importantly, TRUT provides the legal and organisational framework that would be difficult for individual clubs to manage alone. By holding the lease, managing RTWC’s building and facilities, employing staff, and overseeing contracts, compliance, maintenance and insurance, TRUT acts as the single accountable body for the site.
This structure allows each club—including Tees RC—to focus on what matters most: running the sport, supporting members and growing participation. TRUT’s role is to safeguard and strengthen our shared base on the Tees, ensuring long-term stability for all.
In short, TRUT and Tees RC’s interests are aligned. We are all working towards the same goal: a thriving, well-managed river environment that supports our members and the future of rowing on the Tees.
How much does it cost to have TRUT?
Part of TRUT’s remit is to raise funds in order to subsidise club membership costs.
They successfully hire out the Centre for Weddings, Meetings and other functions. The resulting income covers somewhere close to 75% of the cost of running RTWC – meaning the clubs get a very subsidised membership rate.
Can I get more information?
Yes. TRUT meets once a month and each meeting’s minutes are available to view from this page.
And if that’s not enough please reach out to the Captain who will be able to put you in touch a TRUT representative.
