Tees and Seas in Cornwall

Tees Rowing Club

The latest instalment of Wilkinsons’ tours took place at a sea rowing event in Falmouth in Cornwall over the May bank holiday weekend.

The event was the Carrick Crusade, hosted by Carrick Coastal Rowing Club and Tees took down a men’s quad crew and a mixed quad crew.

We rented two coastal quads:

and went out for a practice on the Friday before Saturday’s race:

The practice turned out to be more than 20k, but with a refreshment break half way through!

Race day saw conditions starting off as benign but steadily worsening through the day. The course was 6km with varying turns, including a full 180o.

Now, it turns out that there is a knack to coastal rowing, which us river rowers don’t necessarily possess. And the tougher the conditions the more this becomes apparent.

However, although we didn’t have any Tees wins, great fun was had by all!

This coastal rowing trip south happens each year in April/May time. Our connection is with the Coastal Barbarians club in Studland Bay and we pick one of the events in their calendar. So if you are interested, we’ll see you next year.
