Job Description – Chair
Roles and Responsibilities
- Chair the committee meetings including the Annual General Meeting
- Direct the development, implementation, review and updating of the Club’s strategy and development plan
- Present the public face of the club when required
Key Activities
- Chair the committee meetings. Ensure all members of the committee have an opportunity to air their views; that the meetings stick to the agenda, ensuring that where necessary a discussion is brought to a conclusion and agreement reached on the next step. Where a vote is drawn the Chair has the deciding vote.
- To assume the strategic responsibility for guiding the activities of the Club in accordance with its general strategy and policies
- To ensure the actions agreed by the Committee are carried out
- To be the final arbiter of any escalation process in the event of any issues or complaints, final deciding vote etc.
- To represent or arrange for representation of the Club at the British Rowing regional level meetings and at meetings of other organisations, for example local rowing clubs, as required
- Provide advice and support to the Captain when sought
- Canvas members’ opinions and forward these to the committee where appropriate
- Support the Captain in terms of allocation of equipment
- Ensure any safety concerns are reported to the Safety Adviser
- Ensure Welfare issues are referred to the Welfare Officer
- Ensure the club rules and bye-laws are abided by
Experience Required
- Ideally a widely respected member of the club or at least has a connection to the Club
- Chairing of a committee or team meeting, ideally within a rowing or sports club, but could be within another volunteering or professional environment
- Knowledgeable and experienced in matters concerning rowing and the Club
- Able to devise (with assistance of the Club Captain and others as appropriate) and to articulate a medium and long-term strategy for the future of the Club
- Seen as impartial and approachable by all Club members
Time Required
- A total of 6 hours per month to attend monthly committee meetings; to review the strategy and rate of implementation plan; and to attend other Club issues
