This wonderful old picture is believed to be of activity at Middlesbrough ABC looking across the river towards what we would now say was part of ICI Billingham. Note the pontoon style landings, the staggered seat fours with fixed pin riggers in the foreground, the almost modern looking shell scull and the boatman helping the sculler.
Tees Amateur Boating Club founded, like many sporting clubs, during the Victorian era. 1864 is said to be the date but is this in fact correct? There are indications that a Tees ABC amalgamated with a Stockton ABC on the present site in Boathouse Lane in that year. But if that was the case both of these clubs were founded before then.....
Enquiries, as they say, are in progress....
For instance we have in our possession a quart tankard engraved "T. A .B. C. A E H Trotter (Bow), J Milner, J J Wilson, H C Faber (stroke) J L Turnbull (cox) 16th August 1856". Could this be a very old Tees Amateur Boating Club pot? The date looks as if it may have been engraved later or by a different engraver to the rest of the inscription....
1866Rivals appear on the River Tees in the form of Middlesbrough Amateur Boating Club whose boathouse is some 3 miles downstream in the Newport area of that town (photo above). At this time the lowest river crossing is at Stockton Bridge - now the site of the present Victoria Bridge at Stockton. The two clubs regularly race each other on the Tees. The Stockton course being from Thornaby Wood to the Tees Boathouse, a distance of about one mile whilst the Middlesbrough course is over a similar distance on Billingham Reach. Old programmes in our archives indicate that these were well attended events.

Eventually the boat was sold to St. Andrew's University. Does it still exist?
