Boat Naming  (21 December 2008)

Today at the Tees Rowing Club several new boats to the club were named.

Transporter

This Janousek Eight, purchased with a grant from the Veolia Environmental Trust, was named by Frank Cook MP, Stockton North. The boat is named after the famous bridge in Middlesborough. The origins of Tees Rowing Club being the amalgamation of Middlesborough and Tees Amateur Boating clubs.

To Infinity and Beyond

This Sims Eight was purchased with a grant from The Foundation for Sports and Arts and was named by Frank Cook MP, Stockton North. The boat was named after the new bridge over the River Tees along the Barrage Reach.

Locomotion

This Janousek coxless quad, purchased with a grant from the Veolia Environmental Trust, was named by James Coulton, Junior Captain. The boat is named after the first locomotive placed on the Stockton to Darlington railway, named Locomotion No1.

Ironmasters

This Sims coxless quad was purchased with a grant from The Veolia Environmental Trust and was named by John Green, Club President. The boat was named after an old event in the Stockton Regatta and the Ironmasters district south of the river, which was home to a large number of iron furances. This district was close to the location of the Middlesborough Amateur Boating Club at Newport Bridge.

Scarborough

This Stampfli single was first donated from Scarborough Rowing Club to Bob Hewitt, member of the GB U23 team. Now that Bob has moved onto another single, the boat has been purchased by Tees RC and named Scarborough in recognition of Scarborough Rowing club's support to Bob over the years. The boat was named by Steve Vaslet, Safety Advisor.

Hairy Bikers at Henley  (27 August 2008)

If you fancy a little light relief and you missed it Monday night the Tees RC Thames Cup Eight were invited to tea by the Hairy Bikers at Henley. You can see the show on BBCiPlayer for the next 6 days on this link http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00d61nh

Thursday Racing  (06 July 2008)

Following the win on Wednesday, the Tees VIII was invited for afternoon tea with the Hairy Bikers. The BBC are filming the new series and as Simon King is from Gateshead they wanted a north east crew to shout for. After filming the bikers cheering for us racing, the crew were invited for tea on the river bank.

The series starts on 18 August although we don’t know which programme will feature the crew.

Thursday started much like Wednesday with a 5am alarm call. By 6am we were ready at Henley for our pre-race outing. This went much better than Wednesday’s with the nerves much calmer. After a few bursts and a strong paddle up the course we had about an hour’s rest before boating for the race. This was the first race of the day versus Grosvenor, thus during the warm up there was no other crews around and the crew could focus on their preparation. At 8:58 we lined up on the Berks station ready for the 9am race. The start from Tees was good but Grosvenor managed to get ½ length lead by the barrier. They then pushed hard and opened this to over ¾ by Remenham farm. Then the strong Tees rowing started to pull them back and by the beginning of the enclosures we had reduce the lead to ¼ length. Unfortunately as Grosvenor had pushed through Newport USA in the final stages on Wednesday they also had a strong finished and managed to hold us with the final verdict of ½ a length. The overall time was to stand as the third fastest of the day. Grosvenor went out on Friday to a strong crew from Belgium. The overall event, Thames Cup, was won by Leander club beating Tideway Sculler School by a canvas in the final.

Following the loss by the VIII, 4 of the crew had to pick themselves up and race again at the end of day in the quad. Racing Reading University, they had a strong start, leading at the end of the island. Reading then showed freshness in their legs and started to push passed Tees. Although showing a strong sculling technique the previous 2 VIII’s races had taken the spring out of their legs and Reading pushed passed to finish 1 ½ lengths ahead. The photo is from just entering the enclosures.

The Prince of Wales Cup was won by California Rowing Club who beat Leander and London composite by 1 ¼ lengths in the final.

WIN  (02 July 2008)

The Tees VIII has recorded a win in the first at Henley Royal Regatta. Making difficult for ourselves, on Bucks we allowed Curlew to take the lead off the start. After the race pace settle, Curlew continued to move out and finally took ¾ of a length by the hole in the wall. Tees fighting all the way started to settle into a good pace and were holding the Curlew crew. Following a big push from Tees, we started to ease back on Curlew and by Remenham Club the crew had drawn level. The start of our push for home took half a length off Curlew and then we continued to move away from Curlew to finish ¾ length ahead in a time of 7:09.

Following a long warm down paddle we put the boat back on the rack and meet the Tees supporters. Then it was off to watch the next race in our event, Grosvenor were racing Newport club from USA. In another close race Grosvenor also rowed through passing through the enclosures. So tomorrow we line up on the Berks station against Grosvenor.

Final Preparations  (01 July 2008)

The final training session was done today at 6 am. To simulate the pre-race session that will take place tomorrow morning before the race. As expected the river was very quiet but we are not alone, 2 other single scullers were out padding in the mist around Temple Island. Having done the race warm up, we went up the course doing 3 x 250m, practicing the start, mid race push and final drive for the finish. Following the outing final prep on the boat was done, with the boat washed then T-cut, also a new layer of paint added to the blades.

The rest of the day is being spent sitting around and sleeping in preparation for tomorrow’s race.

Training  (30 June 2008)

Having qualified on Friday and got the draw on Saturday, it is now time for some serious sharpening work. Two outings a day now up to Wednesday’s race which will be at 9:30 in the morning. As well as all the foreign crews there are many university crews still down here. Today was the last hard outing, with 4 times up the track at full power although reduced rate. The crew has developed a solid platform and are taking the advantage of all the free speed of controlling the slide into the catch. The second outing some focused on taking the increased power into the start with us taking of Bristol university over the first 5 strokes.

After the outing a bit of relaxing was had outside the boat tents as seen in the photo.

Also seen below the quad going out for their first training session.

The Draw  (29 June 2008)

Having qualified on Friday evening, the draw is made on Saturday in the town hall in Henley. We had a morning outing then after lunch made our way to the town hall. Stood in the middle of Henley high street a bit like the old town hall in Yarm but a bit larger. The room could seat about 200 people on the far end up on the stage was a set of seats for the Stewards. At the front of the platform was the Grand Challenge Cup, this is used to draw the names out of. The draw was made by Mike Sweeny Chairman of the regatta committee. The sequence was the Grand, Ladies plate then Thames Cup. The first set of selected crews were Leander, Agecroft, Crefelder (Germany) and Club Gent. These were select into the four quarters of the draw so that in theory they will only meet on the Saturday in the semi-finals. A second set of selected crews are either for speed, or to ensure foreign crews are separated. The second 4 selected crews were Newport (USA), London ‘A’, Tideway Scullers School and Allemannia Ruder Club Hamburg. These were drawn into the other half of the quarters from the first selected crews. It was then a random draw of all the other crews. The first crews out avoided the selected crews, then the first difficult draw came to Cygnet who race Tideway Scullers. After 7 crews were then came the read out crew 48 Tees Rowing club. Checking the previous crew out we had drawn Curlew Rowing Club on Wednesday having avoided the main selected crews. Tees RC have drawn the Bucks station giving us the advantage off the start but the stream into the finish.

We then had to wait for the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup and the quads draw. Again there are selected crews, 4 from the 16. Selected crews were California RC, Leander/ Henley, Leander/ London and Tees Rowing Club. The draw was made with Tees pulled out second and taking the top spot in the second half of the draw. We then had to wait for the remainder of the draw to be filled in to see who we had drawn. It came down to the gap next to Tees and the name Reading University was pulled out. The Tees crew taking the Berks station. This first round race will take place on Thursday.

Qualified  (29 June 2008)

It is Friday 27 June. Having travelled down to Henley last night the crew gathered at the boat tents at 9:30. A first outing along the race course for the VIII. After a normal warm up the crew went onto the course to practice their rolling start. Having done this twice the crew continued to paddle up the course through the enclosures and passed the finish. We then returned to our accommodation in Watlington for lunch and rest before the qualifiers.

At 4pm the crew returned to the boat tents. Qualifiers were due to start at 6:40 giving a long time to warm on the ergos and on the water. We boated at 5:50 following an assessment of weather conditions. The wind had picked up since the morning but was gusting and not a constant blow. The warm up went well, then we had the task of making our way through all the other crews involved in qualifiers. In the Thames Cup there were 27 crews racing for 17 places.

Just before we moved into the final marshalling area, the wind start to grow in strength. Some strong strokes from the crew kept us under control while other crews got blown around. Soon after it was our turn. We got straight on the course and waited the few seconds for the required 30sec gap from the previous crew. A good start up onto race pace along the island, then coming out of the island we started to pick up the wind. The crew settled into a strong pace although a few pips lower expected due to the head wind. We maintained the strong pace all the way down the course picking up the rating a few pips in the last 600m.

It was then a 15 minute wait to hear the results. Very soon the announcement came, read out in alphabetical it was a long wait for Tees to be read. The majority of the qualifiers were from the top part of the time trial due to the strong wind that developed in the second half.

The quad had an easier time, this crew had pre-qualified having won at Nottingham and Met regattas.

Down to London again  (13 March 2008)

Just a quick update before travelling to London for the Head of River Race and Vesta Veterans Head.

Tomorrow the Mens crew has 2 outings to sharp their skills and to feel the difference of tideway rowing. Saturday we boat from Putney early morning for a outing to stretch the muscles and for me to have a look at conditions on the course. Boating for the race is at 8:30 to get up to the marshalling by 9:30. The crew is 240 starting in division 5 so about an hour waiting after the start of the race. With novice crew several in front of us, there is a strong chance of some fast overtaking.

Sunday the Vet C crew is going off at number 52 and will boat a good hour before the race to paddle up to Kew for a long warmup. Although going of only 2nd in the marshalling division, this will allow 1 quick overtake, then a gap to settle before hopefully more overtaking.

Good luck to all the Tees crew taking part this weekend.

Lull between Heads  (07 March 2008)

It has been mentioned to me that things will have become quite after finishing the Women's head season. As it is also the begining of the new committee I though I would give you an idea of some of my activities in the club in no particular order.

Arranging outtings and crews for the Women's squad.

Liasing between mens crews racing in London to ensure everyone knows how boats will get there.

Faciliating discussions on the sturcture of the different womens groups.

Discussions on coaching of the various groups and squads.

Initiating discussions on the progression of novices in the club.

Scrutinizing crew selections for major events.

Setting land sessions for circuits every Tuesday and Thursday.

Arranging a workshop for the committee to discuss this year's direction and begin background work for the new development plan.

Discussions with 3rd party organisations about spnsorship.

Discussions about boat purchases, storage and racking policies.

Arranging discussions about a club blazer.

Arranging mini-heads.

Writing Captain's reports to committee.

Collecting nominations for Golden crabs.

Booking and allocation of the Eights.

Coxing Mens 1, Vet C and Women's squad

This is not an exhaustive list but hopefully it explains to you why sometimes it seems I don't have time to listen to you. This is far from my intention and it is probably because you've caught me at a busier time than normal.

The Results  (01 March 2008)

Tees RC result at the head was number 73 in a time of 21:12.69 having beaten York City and Edinburgh University amongst others.

Congratulations to Zoe Lee in Osiris A winning the Head penant, Jen Howse rowing with Durham University finishing 3rd and taking the S2 penant.

Other Tees members Lucy Ventress with Osiris B at 40 and Jo Lywood for Furnivall at 48.

Womens Head Completed  (01 March 2008)

Now siting back at the hotel having completed the Women's head. Dispite the 20 mph tail winds, the race went ahead. The crew had a good warm up and found their marshalling point had a well placed tree to hold on to.

Setting off behind Britol University we set off through Chiswick at 35 settling to 34 after the minute. We quickly closed on Bristol, particularly as they were over to the left of the river. After 3 minutes the rate was settled again to 32. Under Barnes Bridge the crew got along side Bristol and started to have to keep Putney Town behind us.

With Tees on one side and Putney on the other side, Bristol got squeezed. As Putney went past, we push hard and started to stay with Putney. Passing Chiswick Eyot a strong Durham B crew started to close, and Tees started again to push. Reaching Hammersmith and the build for the finish started. Raising the rate 2 pips as Durham were along side.

Pushing Durham across onto Fulham Flats we dug deep and drove onto the finish. Raising the rate twice more, the final push from the black buoy drove the crew across the line. Turning around there were no crews in sight. Coxes time of 21:14 now waiting for everyone elses times.

Against a strong head wind we paddled back to barnes and had the boat out of the water before the last crews finished racing.

Watch this space for results.

One Day to go  (29 February 2008)

All the training is done, the boat derigged and cox box on charge. I've just finished packing my bag, mustn't forget the cox box that's charging and about to go to London for the Head.

There's been a few changes since finishing 72 last year. Most importantly we have a boat that we don't have to strain to carry. Three new crew members this year also. Two from University of Teesside although long standing members of Tees and 1 from the US.

People have asked where we are going to come. Well that depends on how slow the other crews go. The Tees crew will be as fast as possible on the day.

Possible other postings will come from London if I get a connection. Best of luck to crews racing in York this weekend. Now where's that cox box.

Eights pick up speed  (11 February 2008)

Tees Eights completing in next month’s London head are starting to move forward rapidly. With the attention of Tony Stocking, the Women’s crew proved to themselves they have the power to accelerate the finishing as well as maintaining their excellent rhythm and relaxation. This continued on Sunday with them matching speeds they had in London last year still will 3 weeks to go.

After their excellent performances at the weekend Bob, Chris and the other men’s squad had their first outing as an Eight this morning. Staying downstream to avoid the fog they showed that straight away they could gel as a unit and make the boat move off the finish. Both men’s and women’s crew will be on show at Nottingham against top crews such as Cambridge University and Oxford Brookes. Other crews from the men’s group, women and veterans are racing at Tyne and Trent as this becomes one of the busiest weekends are racing at the club. As an extra boost to the crew aiming for London, the new Eight is due to be collected in Nottingham at the weekend.

Tension Mounts  (30 January 2008)

Its the week of the crew selection for the Women’s Head of the River race. As its been a few years since I’ve had to make a full crew selection, the tension is mounting on me as well as the potential crew. This year there is a larger number of people to select from and endless combinations of seat order. Trying to be fair to everyone versus all the selection criteria is a juggling task. Also with entries limited this year, I can’t wait until the deadline to put a crew in. It was looking like we would have two eights so at least everyone would get to go to London and take part, now for various reasons people have dropped out and at looks like only one eight will go. Trying to sort final rearrangements while in Liverpool is proving to be tricky.

Activity for the Heads is increasing in the other groups in the club. The Veteran Novices are also looking at crews selection, the Veteran men are coming together to form two crews and everyone is trying to sort accommodation and ARA numbers. It was a nice distraction to cox the younger Vet crew at the weekend despite the wind.

This weekend of course is Durham Small Boat’s Head. Looking at the number of Tees crews entered it seems that every second crew on the river will be in maroon and sky blue.

A busy active club  (21 January 2008)

Another busy week and weekend. Starting on Tuesday I was discussing potential corporate finance with a third party group that help arrange these partnerships. From there it was straight to the University of Teesside to plan a Team working workshop for the women’s squad with one of the sports science lecturers.

Wednesday night was my night off.

Thursday was the last committee meeting of the current committee. As usually a wide range of topics from how to develop recreational rowing to space requirements in the boathouse and management of the centre.

Friday evening a meeting with Steve Gunn, the national coordinator of World Class Start. A very constructive discussion particularly over a nice meal at John’s.

On to Saturday, firstly an outing with the novice group, in eight rather than four as planned. Then directly an outing with the Women’s squad where we were able to boat 2 VIIIs in preparation for London. Thanks to Gill for helping with the coxing. The rest of the afternoon was then spent repairs the wires for the cox box in the Kate O’Sullivan.

First thing Sunday again out with the Women’s squad, this time in a four and Imogen Leigh helping out in the VIII. Then a quick rush to Blackburn for a family birthday.

Tonight finishes a week of rowing items with a meeting of the regatta organising group.

In between all this there is dealing with a four holed by one of the colleges, an Eights rigger broken (some people don’t know their own strength, that amount of power bodes well for a fast crew) and all the normal small requests from members.

Lots going on at the moment which must be an indication of a highly active club. Its good to see so many people getting out.

Wild and Windy  (14 January 2008)

Another mini head race is over and for the first time in the series I was taking part. Thanks to the Veteran Novices for organizing and doing the timings. The series time are now complete and posted on the Captains Notice board on the stairs. The river flow on Sunday was 40 m3/s.

It seems all day was spent at the boathouseas after the mini-head the women returned to the choppy water for a technical and video session. Although good practice for rowing in London, the outting was shortened to save sanity and equipment.

Preparation for London heads is well under way with currently 8 womens, 3 mens and 3 veteran crews aiming for the Tideway. As Durham Small boats approaches there is also the opportunity for the novice group to enjoy winter head races.

I'm now back to sorting out who sits where in the womens boats for this weekend.

Current flow rate on the Tees is 50-60 m3/s.

Happy New Year  (05 January 2008)

Happy New Year to everyone.

I have just returned from Toronto where I started 2008 in a snow storm. The water in the bay area was frozen solid, this is normally the rowing course. New Year’s day was –17C (daytime) with 5-10 cm of snow.

I am looking forward to 2008 at Tees. Again expectations have been increased following such a great year in 2007. The first event this year will be Durham Small Boats head followed by the big spring VIIIs head races. It seems we will have a record entry this year which will be great for the crews . Looking forward to working with everyone to overcome any challenges with boat allocations leading up to these races

I hope to see you all soon at the boathouse and here’s to a successful 2008.

First Captain's (b)Log  (23 December 2007)

Welcome to the first Captain's (b)log. I intend to post here weekly or biweekly in the new year. My aim is to give a brief summary of the going on at the club both on and off the water, from my view point. I will welcome feedback and any items to add.

This first entry is a look back at the year. Having become Captain in February the first issue (30 minutes after being Captain) was allocation of Eights for crews training towards the London heads. As now, there were more crews than boats but good discussions allow all access to the boats. Throughout the year thanks to crews who have been understanding when allocations have not quite gone their way.

High points for me of the year have been the highest placing of a Women's crew at the Eight's head, highest placing of a crew at Four's Head, winning women's S3 at Durham Regatta, a crew in the second round at Women's Henley, a crew qualifying for Royal Henley, a crew narrowly missing a win at Veteran Henley and a win at Veteran National Championships in the Novice division.

At regional regattas we have had a strong novice group compete at Tees and Durham P&A regattas. Also a combined effort to win the senior prize at Hollingworth Lake.

We have also seen an increase in the off-peak recreational rowing which in the years to come will become an important access to rowing for the wider community. Additionally we have had another corporate event bringing valuable funding and new members. Thanks to all who helped these activities happen.

Finally, I must congratulate all those who competed for Tees or just enjoyed their rowing on the Tees for a highly successful year. Particular congratulations to John Green, Steve Leigh and Brian Conway for their Northern Rowing council Awards.

A Merry Christmas to everyone and here's to an even more successful New Year.

Neil
